The 4 Habits Marriage Event

MOODY CHURCH | CHICAGO

Saturday, Nov. 2

9:30 AM - 5:30 PM

What separates happy marriages from miserable ones?

Surprisingly, it’s not healthy communication. It’s not conflict resolution skills. It’s actually the size of the marriage’s joy gap.

Joy Gap /joi gap/ (n.)-1. The length of time between moments of shared joy

Healthy marriages regularly produce joy, and joy keeps the marriage healthy.  But this kind of happiness and health in marriage isn’t just for the lucky few who stumble upon it.  It turns out that certain relational skills boost your happiness.

Marcus Warner and Chris Coursey will teach you how to develop those skills and how to:

  • return to joy more quickly after disconnection
  • create stronger bonds and elongate times of happiness
  • boost your enjoyment of physical and emotional intimacy

Anchored in the latest brain science and purposing to honor marriage by equipping couples with the 4 Habits of Joy-Filled Marriages, this event gives you insights, exercises, and a plan for keeping your joy gap as small as possible.

Schedule

Based on the new book 4 Habits of Joy-Filled Marriage, this seminar will help you jump start thirty days of joy-building exercises that can shrink the joy gap in your marriage and help you fall in love all over again.  Here is the schedule for the day.

9:30

Shrinking the Joy Gap

Every marriage has a joy gap. When it gets too wide, marriage can get really bad. Joy-filled marriages keep the gap between moments of shared joy small by practicing 4 basic habits that can transform nearly any relationship.

10:30

The Brain Science behind Joy

Joy is the key to emotional capacity. Several recent breakthroughs in brain science have clarified the nature of joy and the process of building it. This session will explain these breakthroughs and how they are relevant to building joy in marriage.

11:30

Play Together

Habit #1 of Joy-Filled Marriage is playing together. Great marriages are built on great friendships and great friends play together often. We will walk through some key ideas and practices that can help you build the habit of playing together regularly and keeping the joy gap small.

12:30

Lunch

Lunch is onsite and included in your registration. (walk-in registration will be allowed but lunch is on your own)

2:00

Listen for Emotion

Habit #2 of Joy-Filled Marriage is listening for emotion. Many of us are left brain dominant when it comes to listening. We listen for problems instead of emotions, which often leaves people feeling uncared for and misunderstood. We will help you understand six core protector emotions and a simple process for validating those emotions that can help your relationship grow.

3:00

Appreciate Daily

Habit #3 of Joy-Filled Marriage is appreciating daily. The most powerful forces in any relationship are appreciation and resentment. Great marriages excel at both practicing appreciation and forgiving what there is to resent.

4:00

Nurture Rhythm

Habit #4 of Joy-Filled Marriage is nurturing rhythm. Just like playing together is important, learning how to rest together is just as important. When we establish a rhythm of rest and play, joy grows faster.
